Edinburgh University Settlement
Effective and lasting social and community development

Community Learning Centre

Welcome to Edinburgh University Settlement Community Learning Centre

We  work with:

  • Adults who have had a negative experience at school, or who have left school with few or no formal qualifications
  • People on low incomes
  • People with disabilities
  • People who have English as a second language
  • Unemployed people or people likely to lose their job

We offer courses for people who want to:

  • Develop their Literacy, Numeracy and IT skills
  • Gain qualifications in Communications, Numeracy and IT along with other subjects such as Psychology, Creative Writing and Digital Photography
  • Develop their Childcare and Parenting knowledge

We also work, often in a very creative way, with local colleges and other voluntary organisations to develop, deliver or support learning programmes within their settings, to suit the needs and interests of the people they work with.

We try to empower people by working with them in a way that builds confidence and plays to their strengths.  As part of this process we encourage the learners we work with to think critically about the society they live in, the issues that they have to face and the learning that they are participating in.

Edinburgh University Settlement was founded in 1905 as an independent voluntary organisation under the auspices of the University of Edinburgh. It maintains a successful partnership for social change with the University and other institutes of further and higher education.

Edinburgh University Settlement is a member of the British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres and the International Federation of Settlements and Neighbourhood Centres.
